Opening of Spiderman 2
Opening of
Spiderman 2
Spiderman 2 opens with him falling through the sky, they
follow his movements through New York using a tracking shot; a city is a
conventional setting for an action movie as the public feel they will be saved
by their ‘hero’. This is effective as it shows Spiderman to have
powers/abilities and is supernatural. Therefore this highlights to the audience
that this is a superhero fantasy film. The tracking shot is combined with music
and the sound of the traffic to add excitement, followed by the sound of
Spiderman’s webs.
The audience soon realises that this is an action movie
because there is a lot going on, and there seems to be a dangerous villain on
the loose as you hear through the police radio. The medium shot of the angry
man screaming whilst driving dangerously through the city shows he doesn’t care
about the public and they are very vulnerable at this moment in time.
The driver notices that the police have caught up with them
and overtaken them, they start to understand that they are soon to be caught.
The cars pursuit the truck through chaotic traffic and is shown though some
medium shots so you see the whole scene. The driver then realises the severity
of his actions and is in a bid to not get caught, so he’s picks up more speed
and crushes the polices car with the truck.
As Spiderman swings through city, the public start to cheer
with happiness, this shows they see Spiderman as there saviour and it really
grips your attention. The shot then quickly changes to Spiderman landing on the
truck and a side shot showing the driver and the window. Spiderman then pops up
at the window and the driver’s facial expression is shocked and he carries on
driving dangerously. It is an engaging opening because it creates suspense and
tension through the fast-paced action shots.
Opening analysis for The Woman in Black
Opening analysis for The Woman in
Black
The woman
in black opens with eerie and unsettling non-diegetic sound combined with a
close-up shot of a children's tea party, this highlights to
the audience that the film is a part of the horror genre. This scene
creates several enigma codes for the audience as the music creates
a sinister atmosphere whereby the audience suspect that
something dramatic and unsettling is going to happen at the tea party.
The
mise-en-send includes a playful, innocent image of three young girls having a
tea party which turns into something creepy and conventional of horror films,
as they approach the three windows at the end of the room. The audience follow
the girls through a tracking shot. This further creates an enigma as the
audience want to know what the girls are looking at and doing. Match-on-action
is used to show that the girls open the window, this creates tension and
suspense as this is highlighted as a significant action.
The three girls jump out of the window and shockingly die, this is conventional of a horror film. This is followed by a medium shot of the empty bedroom, creating an eerie unsettling scene. The sequence is silent, except for the non-diegetic horror score that drives the scene, until we hear the off-screen sound of a scream of the children's mother, as we cut to a startlingly quick close-up shot of a creepy looking doll.
Opening analysis of Dawn of Planet of the Apes
Opening analysis of Dawn of
Planet of the Apes
The
opening to Dawn of Planet of the Apes starts with a close up shot of a powerful
looking ape. He connotes power because he's looking at the ground and his hand
is in the air. The non-diegetic sound is intense music which creates tension.
The close up shot widens to a medium shot so the audience know that the ape is
part of a tribe. The diegetic sound is of an ape calling, he commands his army
to hunt.
All the
apes start running and the action sets off, this shows the apes in a powerful
light. Suddenly, there's a medium shot of a roaring bear that
appeared from the bush making one of the apes scream. The bear attacks the ape
but does not succeed as another ape steps in and kills it. This
shows us how powerful they are and symbolises that hunting in a pack is a
lot safer than hunting on your own. There's a close up shot of the
apes to show an intense relationship.
The
medium shot of the apes on horses shows that they have authority and
the sinister faces symbolize violence. The non-diegetic sound of
calm triumph music shows that the hunting is over and has ended
in success.
