This sound track that we used for our filming experience was
intriguing and engaging to our audience. This is because the dramatic music
allows our movie to fulfill the aspects that come from a horror genre. Our
scary movie forms the audience to feel tense in the first place, in which this
soundtracks adds to the tension and eerie feeling forming our movie to fulfill
the horror genre. This soundtrack is similar to tracks used in movies such as
the conjuring and the ring, therefore our movie is trying to give of the same
scary atmosphere to our audience.

Opening two minutes
Frass
up
The opening credits show PAV Productions with an
eerie smoke blowing behind it. The eerie smoke could foreshadow the type of
genre of the movie. The next credit shows a hallway with the movie title 'Frass
up', this title in flickering red. The colour shows the audience that bloody
scenes are likely to happen during the upcoming movie. The dimming of the light
in the hallway could suggest that the lighting in the movie could represent the
suspense and add eeriness. The dark and sinister music in the background helps
both credits to foreshadow the upcoming horror genre. The first cut of our movie shows a scary scene from a hollywood movie. This cut foreshadows the upcoming events which are gonna happen in our movie. It then shows Jackson and Joe talking about the movie and how it isn't scary. This shows to the audience that they are naive about the upcoming scene's. It then shows jackson walking down stairs and closing the front door which was left open. This shows the character has no idea what is happening, this create a realistic atmosphere as they have no clue about the upcoming events. After this it shows a mysterious character walking and staring at joe, who is naive about him, looking at his phone. The shot of the 'evil' character only shows his legs creeping around. This makes a mysterious atmosphere as no one knows who he is. The next shot shows the evil character looking at joe, with the camera angle making it seem were watching the movie 'through his eyes'. This makes the movie seem more realistic. The next couple shots are with the same camera angle to make the movie seem more realistic to the audience. Throughout all these scenes, there is a sinister music in the background. This music only plays when the evil character is in the shot. This creates a sinister atmosphere whenever the evil character is around. Throughout these scenes jackson has been downstairs getting drinks. This creates a realistic atmosphere as he is naive of what is going on. When Jackson comes back upstairs to the room he finds Joe dead on the sofa. As this happens the sinister music comes on again. This shows the audience that the evil character is coming, and a sinister scene is ahead.
Preliminary Task and Evaluation
We decided to make a further preliminary task that linked closely to the brief of having two characters interact.
In the clip you can see talk characters walking through a door followed by a match on action when one of the character opened the door. Then there is a shot reverse shot, over the shoulder shot to show the conversation between the two characters.
We had problems with the sound when filming the clip. You can hear the conversation between the characters after they have walked through the door. however, you cannot hear the conversation before the characters walk through the door. Therefore, we will experiment with filming and the sound for our final film.
The issue with the film and sound may be due to the fact that we filmed it on an iphone. For our final film we will film it on a Song HD camera so that the film footage and sound is of a high standard.
Some of the film is a bit faded and distorted so again we hope that this will be resolved by using the Sony HD camera.
We used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the film. We dragged the footage in to the timeline, cut the clips and add a cross dissolve transition. It was interesting to experiment with Adobe but we plan to use many more features, tools and effects for our final film. This film was a taster of what is to come for our final film Frass Up.

Director’s opinions and view on key features of our opening:
In our
production company we have a company name of PAV productions, this is due to
there being a deeper meaning to the cooperation group of this movie, in which
PAV is a connect name to a social group of the creators of the film. Furthermore
P.A.V stands for photograph audio visual, this is because these are the main
aspects that we focus on when creating a film. The logo of P.A.V productions is
shown below. We created this logo because it has features of being cool and
trendy, in which this is unique and engaging. Therefore in connection to our
film production the features of our logo represents our movies made, also the
logo represents are Production Company to be extremely unique.
An independent film production company is responsible for
finding a script, financing, Actors, Directors, and Writers, usually in that
order. Ideally you start with at least one, if not all three. Therefore a
production company is responsible for the process and set up of a film engaging
in any aspect about the making of a film, in which it is all up to them to
create the film and put people in specific roles to create the film.
A film distributor is responsible for the marketing of a
film. The distribution company is usually different from the production
company. In our film we have used the distributor from the movie Hush as we
engage in the same sort of audience as them. Therefore in this case we have
used the distributor of Netflix. This is because Netflix has the same sort of
audience as our movie wants.
The money from our film will come from the distributor as we
will get a certain amount of money from allowing our film to be shown on
Netflix. In are opening titles we have various people named, identify the major
actors and crew, while the closing credits list an extensive cast and
production crew. This is to allow other films to be able to find out who was in
the film and who created the film, as they may be a good person to create there
film.
Our film is similar to the movie hush and don’t hang up. Both
these movies had a distributor of Odeon and Netflix earning their money by
being shown threw the cinema and on a app. They was produced by blumhouse
productions, Blumhouse Productions is an American film and television
production company, founded by Jason Blum. Blumhouse is mostly known for
producing low-budget horror movies, such as the Paranormal Activity, Insidious
and The Purge franchises. This production company is closely linked to our
horror movie as we are producing a low budget horror movie.

How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
In our movie we have a set of particular social groups to
engage an audience similar to the social groups of the actors. Likewise we have
picked a specific social group of 2 friends that are extremely close, this
therefore attracts an audience of the similar friendships groups as they can
relate to this social group.
In our film we have chosen a specific relationship of two
teenaged boys that are best friends. This type of social group has been
influenced by the movie ‘don’t hang up’ in which the social group of two
teenagers that are best friends engages an audience similar to the type of
actors in the movie. Therefore in this case our audience will engage an
audience of teenaged boys due to them being able to relate to the people in the
movie.
In our movie we have specific similarities and differences to
the movie ‘don’t hang up’ to create the same sort of atmosphere, using the best
aspects of characters and not using the bad aspects that we do not want to see
in our movie.
Firstly we have similarities of the same appearances as we
have two decent looking boys in both movie, in which this will engage the
audience to draw a connection to the boys due to their appearance. Likewise we
also had a similar dress sense to the movie ‘don’t hang up’ in the sense that
our dress sense was causal teenaged boys clothing allowing the audience to feel
comfortable watching these actors as they feel like they are the same social
group as them. Another similarity was the roles they both played as they are
best mates that get along well and have a genuine close relationship.
On the other hand we had one difference to the movie ‘don’t
hang up’ in the roles they played because one of the actors in the movie ‘don’t
hang up’ went against his friend in the movie forming there to be hatred
between the two, therefore we didn’t use this as we want our audience to really
feel a connection with our actors and not feel hatred towards either of them.
Stereotypes
We used specific stereotypes so that teenagers can
relate to the actors in the opening two minutes. We chose the actors to talk
like teenagers using slang which they could understand and also again relate
to, this will make the audience more interested in the film overall and will
enjoy it more.
The outfits we chose to wear were tracksuits which were fashionable so that the public view the characters as relatable teenagers. We used brands which are very well know and very fashionable to show that teenagers like to always wear good quality clothes. Also the haircuts are fashionable as well which again represents they like looking good all the time; these are conventional stereotypes of teenagers and the audience would recognise these. Also, these stereotypes would attract our target audience of teenager girls and boys because they can identify with these characters and this could make them want to watch the film and it would create tension for them as they may think this event could happen to them.

Opening title analysis
Opening title analysis
Catch me if you can
Titles are very important in the opening sequence of a film as they have a variety of different purposes for example they inform the audience who the director, producer, and actors are in the film. Also they can add to the narrative and inform the audience what the genre is. For example in Catch me if you can Stephen Spielbugs name appears twice at beginning and end of the titles because he is a well know successful director and producer there for he will sell the film and attract audiences. Also in the opening sequence Leo and Tom hanks names appear near the beginning of the sequence because they are well known and credible actors and will attract fans. They titles are animated and appear long side animation which summarise the narrative and events of the film this would gage audiences and would to see the real chase and if Leo is caught by Tom Hanks. The titles have lines which roll in and out which emphasises and connotes chase between the characters.
Insidious
Insidious the first title of Alliance Films, the production company appears in red font. This straight away informs the audience that the horror is genre as the colour red connotes blood, violence and gore. The next title to appear is the name of the director, this title is in black font and is placed inside the lampshade. It therefore stands out to the audience and is slowly starts to move clockwise inside the lampshade until the title slowly fades out. This is an effective transition as the movement slowly matches the creepy, eerie, slow non-diegetic music in the opening. The name of the film, ‘Insiduous’ appears in startling red font, which is flickering. This links back to the lightshade and dark low key lighting in the room. However, the colour red signifies that in ‘Insiduous’ there will be blood and gore, also when the violins they are used to scare the audience and make the jump but to mainly state what the film, is going to be like. The eerie writing in the opening credits show to the audience that the film id going to be a horror film; also when the name disappear states that there could be maybe Ghost and sinister characters and moments. Overall the opening scene is eerie and a build-up of tension they do this to set the tone for the main film.
· Still image – A still image is a movie
title that goes over a scene, usually used in thriller and horror films due to
it being more realistic
· Animation- is when the movie goes in to
cartoon for the credits just like the film “ catch me if you can”
· Black and white
· Motion graphics

Frass up practice titles
"Frass
Up" shows a scary sinister hallway which creates a best atmosphere for the
audience and put the audience in the horror mindset to get ready to watch the
film. The flickering light gives threatening eerie tone to the film.
We created these titles on Adobe After Effects using an image from Google
and lighting effects. We also added titles using the fonts on the software and
we chose red to match PAV productions and link to the codes and conventions of
the horror genre.
The first clip is
of our production company and we made the production company titles.
PAV stands for
Production Audio Visuals; we chose this name because it clearly links to how
films are created. Also, the abbreviation is quite catchy and professional. PAV
productions is a small production company, similar to Metro who created Hot Tub
Time Machine which was a small but successful film. We want our film to target
an English audience but it would be great if through social media and Netflix
we could target a global audience.

The second clip
which is the title of the film "Frass Up" shows a scary sinister
hallway which creates a best atmosphere for the audience and put the audience
in the horror mindset to get ready to watch the film. The flickering light
gives threatening eerie tone to the film.
The first clip
gives of the sense of horror for the audience as smoke is used to give an eerie
atmosphere for the audience and as it is the first thing they will watch it
will set the mood and sense for the rest of the scene; smoke connotes death.
The horror film
foreshadows the horror events which are going to happen in the film and also
creates realism for the audience as teenagers often watch horror films with
their friends.
The storyline is
about how the two boys are watching a horror film and what happens is they
become the horror film and they eventually find out it's not just them town in
the house.
This a low angle
shot of our villain. Low angle shots stereotypically show power, so the
audience will understand that this is the villain who is going to attack the
boys. Also, it is clear through his costume that he is the villain as he is
wearing dark clothing and a mask. Furthermore, by the audience only seeing his
eyes creates tension as they may also fear the villain.
These are the two
main protagonists, they are wearing recognisable clothing - tracksuits, which
the audience would relate to and may find attractive according to the Female
Gaze theory. The low key lighting is effective and shows that it is night time
and this sets the scene. Night time is a typical time of night that horror
films are set so instantly the audience would recognise it is a horror
film.
The characters
are introduced straight from the opening scene when the credits come up saying
the name and that the is a medium short of Joe and Jackson then later on the
killer is shown on camera which is Shea and his name is shown.
Overall
film analysis:
The title of the
film is called Frass Up. The film was located in Shea's house and the costumes
we chose to wear was tracksuit to relate to what the characters were like and
that they were just typical teenagers. Also the props we used was just two
glass of water, a tv controller and a knife. We decided to do different camera
shots and angles to make the film for exciting for the people who watch it and
to get higher marks. We used bloody colour font to give the it a horror feel
before the audience even watch the film.
The genre of film
is horror/thriller it's suggested in the film as tension is built for example
when Jackson comes down and the door is open. The special effects shown
are to do with editing and the crossover from each scene to the next and
music at the beginning. Also we used Adobe After Effects to create smoke for
our production title. This was an effective use of technology, which relates to
typical horror opening where special effects are used to create enigma
codes.

What targets will you set yourself for G324 next year –
when you will make a trailer?
Next year, are group will need to make a lot of change’s which
include; lighting, sounds and editing. To improve our lighting we will invest
in new lighting equipment that’ll will give us low key and high key lighting.
Furthermore, this will enhance the other microelements within our film, to
increase our overall mark.
To improve our sound we will need to add more non-diegetic
and diegetic sounds. We will experiment with different types sound such as
non-diegetic and diegetic sound. We could research free sound effects and could
potentially layer different types of sound. This would create a chilling
atmosphere and could create more enigma codes.
In order to help us develop our editing skills, we should
watch more online tutorials, where we could learn about different effect
transitions. These transactions will include layering sound, adjusting colour
and enhancing it. These effects will help us create a better atmosphere for the
audience. We will experiment with Adobe after Effects and try to create
different movies title and experiment colour effects on the movie.
Also, next year we would like to improve our time
management. This is because we left our filming to the last minute. This was
bad because it meant that we had to rush the filming and therefore only filmed
each scene only once or twice.

Who would
be the audience for your media product?
Our target audience for our movie would be teenagers
ageing from 15-18+. We decided to choose this age group because this age group
would relate the most with our actors and movie. Also, this age group has
disposable money probably from their parents, so therefore this may lead to
lots of teenager viewers watching our film and therefore leads to more profit.
If this movie was aimed at a lower age group, the audience wouldn’t relate to
the actors or the movie as much. This is because in our film we have three
teenage protagonists and there are tradition teenage stereotypes. They have
hoodie and tracksuits and recognisable fashion and clothing; which the teenage
audience will realise.
Our movie is focused on the male gender because the
stereotype of males tend to like action/horror movie. We aimed it at the male
target audience because if we aimed it at the female gender we may get lower
viewers because they may not want to be scared. This is because the stereotype
of females is that they tend to like comical movies; such as Rom/Coms and
Comedy’s. Our movie is horror based so therefore we would get more viewers if
we aimed it at the male gender. However the film may still appeal to the female
target audience because they might be attracted to the male actors.
Teenagers would be our main target audience as they could
relate with the actors. The audience would relate to the actors as they would
be the same age, wear the same cloths and also would be doing the same stuff as
the actors. For example teenagers would wear tracksuits when lounging round a
friend’s house. Relating to the audience would make the movie more intense and
more realistic as they feel it could happen to them at any time.

What have we learnt since we’ve done our preliminary task?
Since our preliminary task we’ve learnt that it takes a lot more time and editing to make the film look good. We’ve also learnt a lot more about adobe premiere pro as well, using the transactions and adding cool effects to make our final product look as good as it can. Another thing that we learnt is that when you are trying to perform different camera angles it’s harder to get a still professional shot when you’re trying to do the 180 degree rule and match-on-action. Also when we were editing we found out how to make title screens, this helped a lot when it came to our final film because it made our film look more professional. This all helped due to we can put all of these camera angles we used from the preliminary task into the opening two minutes of what film we decided to make. We also learned from all the angles what effect it gives to the audience members and how they feel when watching the actors; we are going to use the camera angles to represent to the audience relationship between the actors for example if it is a still shot directly looking at the actors walking then they are equal and on the same level rather than if there is a shot over the shoulder of one actor looking down on another actor then it represents power.

What have
you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Firstly, whilst filming, we were getting used to using the
camera, using the tripod with the camera was good because we got some still
shots which makes the filming look professional.
Next, we used the technology provided at school, on the
computers we had access to adobe premiere pro. We used this to put our film
together and make our title screen/director screen.
Then, we used YouTube to add sound, for example, we were
getting little clips of eerie music which adds a scary effect and puts the
viewer on the edge of there seat.
