horror codes and conventions

Horror codes and conventions

For a horror genre the target audience is aimed at the male target and mainly at the teenaged years, the narrative content of the film is predicable, in which you are able to predict what happens next but this causes suspense and tension. As well as there is a clear binary opposition where there is clear good characters and clear bad characters. Furthermore there is a high use of low key lighting making the film very dull and dark, which is in connection to evil and horror. Also there is a dominant representation of gender where the male is usually the villain and the women is usually the victim. Teenagers and young adults are usually the characters place in a horror film due to their low common sense and high determination. The camera angles mainly consists of close up shots, point of view and low angle shots which all inherit a scary theme. Lastly they also use hand held camera shots to form audience identification.
